Going back to school
Yao revealed in an interview with Xinhua News Agency after his press conference that he has been planning to get college training, though declined to mention the school and the major.
However, Sohu, one of China's leading Internet portals, claimed that Yao had chosen Shanghai Jiao Tong University and would like to major in finance and computer engineering.
Speaking of his study plans, Yao said that successful retired players, like Li Ning and Olympic Ping-Pong gold medalists, Deng Yaping and Wang Nan, all started their new life after studying, and so will he.
"Study is a must-do next step," added Yao. "I already made plans for this, and may start before the end of this year."
Comma, not a period
Though Yao finally announced his widely expected retirement this week, his career is far from over, and he may become more successful with his business empire in the future.
"Finally, I want to thank the time that we live in, giving me the opportunities to realize my dreams and find my self-worth," he said at the conference. "I once said even if I retire from my professional career, I hope that it would be a comma, not a period. Today, that day has finally arrived, but I will not leave basketball."
"My life will continue. I am still Yao Ming, and there are many more things I wish to accomplish," he added.
