China to participate in UN secretary-general election process responsibly: FM spokesperson

(ECNS) -- China will participate in the election process for the next United Nations secretary-general in a responsible manner, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday.

Asked whether China was considering supporting Rebeca Grynspan, secretary-general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and former vice president of Costa Rica, or Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Guyana's permanent representative to the UN, Guo said the election bears on UN reform and development as well as the vital interests of all member states.

China supports selecting, in accordance with the UN Charter, a new secretary-general who abides by the Charter, demonstrates outstanding competence, upholds impartiality and integrity, and carries out their responsibilities with dedication, Guo said.

China will work with all relevant parties and participate in the election process in a responsible manner, he added.
