China voices concern over U.S. Typhon missile deployment in Japan

(ECNS) -- The deployment of the U.S. Typhon missile system in Japan poses a strategic security concern, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday, warning that it could heighten the risk of military confrontation and an arms race. 

Guo made the remarks in response to a question about a recent diplomatic note sent by Russia to Japan concerning the deployment of the U.S. Typhon system on the island of Kyushu.

The Typhon missile system is a strategic offensive weapon, and Japan's introduction of the system is another sign of its accelerating remilitarization, Guo said.

He added that the deployment risks escalating military confrontation and fueling an arms race, threatens strategic balance and regional stability, and undermines the legitimate security interests of neighboring countries.

China has lodged strong protests with Japan through diplomatic channels and recently sent a diplomatic note reiterating its position, Guo noted.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Tokyo Trial. Guo urged Japan to engage in serious reflection on its history of aggression, heed the concerns of countries in the region and stop pursuing efforts toward remilitarization.
