(ECNS) -- CK Hutchison Holdings Ltd said Thursday it has launched international arbitration against Panama under an investment treaty, seeking more than $1.5 billion in damages over the loss of its port concessions.
The company said Panama breached treaty protections through measures in 2025 and 2026 that ended its contracts and led to the takeover of the Balboa and Cristobal terminals. Hutchison notified Panama of the dispute in February and sought a settlement, but only one consultation was held with no compensation offered.
Founded by Hong Kong billionaire Li Kashing, Hutchison said it “strongly disagrees” with Panama’s actions and urged investors to exercise caution. The company said it will continue pursuing resolution while protecting its rights under international law.
