(ECNS) -- A fresh batch of 20 metric tons of Gala apples on Saturday departed Weining County in Guizhou Province for Vietnam via cold-chain transport, reaching the border within 24 hours. The high-altitude fruit, affectionately nicknamed "sunshine sweethearts," is quickly gaining popularity across Southeast Asia.
Since early August, more than 200 metric tons of apples have been shipped to Vietnam and Thailand, while exporters have secured 2,000 metric tons in pre-orders even before the harvest reaches its peak.
Grown at an average altitude of 2,200 meters and benefiting from more than 1,800 hours of sunshine annually, Weining apples are known for their high sugar content, vibrant color and crisp texture. Combined with their durability during transportation, these qualities have made them increasingly competitive in international markets.
Supported by advanced cold-storage technology that can keep the fruit fresh for up to 10 months, Weining now accounts for more than 95% of Guizhou's total fruit exports. Local producers are also looking to expand into other Southeast Asian markets, including Malaysia and Indonesia.
