(ECNS)—Tests were carried out on self-driving vehicles carrying passengers in Beijing on Monday, the Beijing News reported.

After a certificate-granting ceremony, 40 self-driving vehicles equipped with Baidu autonomous driving systems were tested on roads in the Yizhuang economic development zone.

The vehicles followed strict rules for operating in the capital city, where detailed regulations were launched for the testing of autonomous vehicles earlier this month.

For example, self-driving vehicles should be freely transferred to driver mode, and volunteers participating in tests must be above 18 years of age and have full capacity for civil conduct.

Drivers participating in the test must have more than 100 hours of normal road testing experience for the same vehicle type. Additional commercial insurance is also mandated by the regulations.

The Beijing municipal government has granted license plates to 77 self-driving vehicles as of December 2019.
