With the Spring Festival approaching, artisans are busy making traditional dragon lanterns in southwest China's Guizhou Province.
To celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year, which is also the Year of the Dragon according to the Chinese zodiac, a 72-year-old craftsman and his wife in Sinan County are making 70 dragon lanterns for celebration events.
In Zhenyuan County of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong autonomous prefecture, artisans are making 30-meter-long dragon lanterns out of bamboo for the upcoming Zhenyuan Dragon Lantern Fair.
The Zhenyuan Dragon Lantern Fair is over 400 years old and was added to the provincial intangible cultural heritage list in 2007. A traditional dragon lantern production involves a dozen steps, including cutting bamboo, making a frame, gluing cloth and painting. A total of 12 communities will participate in this year's dragon lantern exhibition and performance activity.
