A makeshift bridge opened to traffic on Sunday morning after Lixinsha Bridge, the only land transport link to Sanmin Island in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, collapsed after being hit by a barge.

The makeshift bridge connects the island in Guangzhou's Nansha district and Minzhong township in neighboring Zhongshan city, with limits set on the height, load and speed on the vehicles passing the bridge.

Built in seven days, it is 138 meters long and 8 meters wide and allows small vessels to pass under it, according to the constructor China Railway Guangzhou Engineering Group Co.

A span of Lixinsha Bridge collapsed after two supports were struck by a barge on Feb 22. The bridge is currently being repaired.

After the accident, two additional temporary ferry docks were set up on the island to facilitate people and cargo traffic from the island, where about 9,100 residents live.
