Meng Fanli was elected as Guangdong governor during the fourth session of the 14th People's Congress of Guangdong province on Wednesday, replacing Wang Weizhong.

Wang resigned as the governor of Guangdong and took the role of secretary of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region's committee of the Communist Party of China earlier this year.

Meng was appointed as vice-governor and acting governor by the province's People's Congress. He is a member of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

A native of Linyi, Shangdong province, Meng has been the deputy Party secretary of Guangdong and the Party secretary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone since April 2022.

He joined the CPC in March 1986. Before he was transferred to Guangdong province, he had been the Party secretary of Baotou in Inner Mongolia since September of 2020. In November 2021, Meng was elected as deputy Party chief of Inner Mongolia.

Meng also used to be the mayor of Qingdao in Shandong province, Party secretary and mayor of Yantai, and director of the Shandong Provincial Department of Commerce.
