(ECNS) -- Greenland's government said Monday it cannot accept a U.S. takeover of the territory "under any circumstances."
Similarly, Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said Monday in a Facebook post that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and the land's security and defense fall within NATO.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte echoed those remarks at a press conference the same day, saying the alliance would do everything necessary to protect the Arctic region, which he described as a vital part of NATO territory.
EU Council President António Costa made the organization's stance clear last Wednesday, saying Greenland belongs to its people and that it has full EU support.
Last week, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement alongside Denmark, signaling support for Greenland against Trump's takeover threats.
