(ECNS) -- More than 300 Canadian political, academic, cultural, and community leaders gathered in Toronto in late July for a commemorative event organized by Canadian-Chinese groups to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
The event included speeches, cultural performances, historical photo exhibitions, and displays of wartime artifacts.
Cheng Hongbo, deputy consul general of China in Toronto, emphasized the significance of the Chinese people's prolonged resistance against aggression. He called on overseas Chinese in Canada to carry forward the spirit of that struggle, safeguard the legacy of World War II's victory and international fairness, and serve as a bridge to strengthen China-Canada friendship.
During the event, Warren Bethune, president of the Toronto Canada-China Friendship Association, recounted Canada's involvement in the Asian theater during World War II.
Bethune praised the enduring friendship between the two peoples and highlighted the humanitarianism and internationalism demonstrated by Canadians during the war. He also expressed hope for the continuation of Canada-China friendship across generations.
Zhang Liling, a 92-year-old descendant of a Huangpu (Whampoa) Military Academy alumnus, told the story of her father's wartime experiences during the commemorative event and called for solidarity among compatriots. Other guests also shared their personal family stories during the war.
