(ECNS) -- A teacher in his 30s fell from a building of Zhejiang University on Monday, according to posts on Chinese social media platforms on Tuesday.
Netizens said that the teacher worked for the College of Biosystems Engineering and Food Science and had passed away.
According to the university website, the teacher specialized in research areas including fruit and vegetable harvesting equipment, agricultural robotics, and bio-inspired soft robotics.
An emergency department staff member at a local hospital in Hangzhou confirmed that the teacher had accepted emergency treatment on Monday and both the university and the teacher's families were aware of the incident.
Zhejiang University has not yet released any official statement regarding the incident.
A staff member from the college told the media they were unable to provide any information and subsequently hung up the phone. Another staffer from Zhejiang University's labor union stated it was during the summer holiday and thus inconvenient to comment.
The department chair where the teacher worked told reporters they would "not disclose any information externally at this time" about the teacher's funeral.
As of Wednesday morning, the topic "The truth behind Zhejiang University teacher's death" has attracted over 1.2 million views on the Chinese social media platform Weibo.
The public has called on the university to disclose incident details to ensure transparency and curb misinformation.
