Chen Cixuan, a 90-year-old professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Automation at Wuhan University in Hubei province, won the 2023 Yu-Hsiu Ku Electrical Engineering Award, the highest individual award in the field of electrical engineering worldwide, the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering announced recently.
The annual award was established in 2010 by the society and the Power &Energy Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. It is given to an expert who has made significant achievements in the field of electrical engineering and made significant contributions to the advancement of electrical power.
Chen was given the award for her "outstanding contributions to grounding technology and over-voltage protection of power systems, as well as electrical engineering education", the notice said.
Born in 1933 in Shanghai, Chen graduated from Tsinghua University with a degree in electrical engineering in 1953. She went to the Harbin Institute of Technology in Heilongjiang province to study electrical engineering as a graduate student.
In 1956, Chen graduated and has been closely bonded with high-voltage engineering ever since.
Among her many achievements, Chen built China's first high-pressure oscillation circuit device in Harbin in 1958, which created conditions for the development of a lightning arrester.
"Each generation has its own mission and responsibility," Chen told her students upon learning of the award. "I will always do my part."
