The ongoing lockdown in New Delhi has been extended by another week owing to the surge in the COVID-19 cases, announced Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday.
The restrictions imposed last week in the capital Delhi will continue till May 3.
Addressing a virtual press conference, Kejriwal said, "The virus continues to wreak havoc in Delhi. We had imposed a six-day lockdown in Delhi. The lockdown is being extended to next Monday till 5 a.m. While the positivity rate has reduced, Delhi has been seeing an acute shortage of medical oxygen."
In the wake of the ongoing pandemic, hospitals across India have been reporting a shortage of oxygen supply.
New Delhi, one of the worst COVID-19 affected places in India, has been seeing a surge in COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks. On Saturday the national capital saw an increase of nearly 24,000 cases and 357 deaths.
India's COVID-19 tally reached 16,960,172 on Sunday with 349,691 new cases recorded in the past 24 hours. This is the fourth consecutive day when over 300,000 daily cases were registered in the country.
