(ECNS) — China has had the world's largest installed wind power capacity for 16 straight years, and its wind turbine exports are still rising, the Chinese Wind Energy Association of the China Renewable Energy Society said Wednesday.

China added 53.26 gigawatts of grid-connected wind power capacity in the first eight months, bringing its total to 692.72 gigawatts by the end of August, up 19.64% from a year earlier, data from the association showed.

As domestic wind power capacity and electricity generation continue to grow steadily, Chinese wind turbine makers are also expanding their overseas reach. They have exported turbines to 60 countries across all six inhabited continents, the association said. Seven Chinese manufacturers have established overseas factories or plan to build them, bringing production closer to international markets.

China exported 1,175 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 7.75 gigawatts last year, an increase of nearly 50% from a year earlier, according to the association's latest data. Cumulative exports reached 6,974 turbines, with a total capacity of 28.52 gigawatts.
