(ECNS) -- China will send Ran Ran, a female giant panda born on May 31, 2017, to Belgium to continue a bilateral giant panda conservation and research program, the China Wildlife Conservation Association said on Monday.
The move follows a supplementary agreement on joint giant panda conservation and research signed by the association and Belgium's Pairi Daiza zoo in September 2026.
Hao Hao, a female giant panda that had lived in Belgium for 11 years, returned to China ahead of schedule in late 2025.
To continue their longstanding cooperation on giant pandas, China and Belgium recently agreed to send another adult female giant panda to Belgium and signed the supplementary agreement after friendly consultations.
Under the agreement, China will provide Belgium with a healthy, captive-bred adult female giant panda to continue a joint conservation program launched in February 2014.
Organizations in both countries are working closely to finalize arrangements for Ran Ran's care and management and prepare for her departure.
2026 marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Belgium.
The planned transfer of Ran Ran is an important step in strengthening bilateral cooperation on giant panda conservation.
The two countries have continued to strengthen collaboration in giant panda care and breeding, disease prevention and control, public education and scientific research.
The two sides will strengthen giant panda care and research, safeguard the health and welfare of pandas living abroad, and further advance bilateral cooperation in wildlife conservation, the association said.
