(ECNS) -- The summer blockbuster Once Upon a Time in the Middle East stands as a vivid testament to profound cultural and cinematic exchanges between China and Egypt, with dozens of local Egyptian actors featured in its cast.

To authentically depict Arab cultural landscapes and daily life, the production team conducted multiple field investigations across the Middle East, including Egypt, and built nearly 200 exotic‑style buildings on location. A large casting call in Cairo drew more than 13,700 applicants, with dozens of Egyptian actors selected.

Young Egyptian actor Omar Sherif, who plays the key role of Seif, an orphan who becomes an apprentice at the Dragon Restaurant, praised the crew of the film are highly professional and goal-oriented, which strengthened his confidence in delivering a good performance.

The film's production featured close cooperation between Chinese and Egyptian teams, with local actors and cultural consultants refining script details and verifying customs. Chinese crew members provided months of acting training and logistical support. The film also blends Egyptian musical elements, weaving together the charms of both civilizations.

Director Wen Muye said the team conducted five to six research trips to the Middle East. "Beyond local features, what matters most is human connection," he said. Since its release, the film has earned wide acclaim, with box office earnings exceeding 2 billion yuan ($298 million).
