(ECNS)-- A claim made on a pro-independence political talk show that "people in Beijing don't have refrigerators" is detached from reality and will only become a laughingstock, a Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The remark was made by Liao Mei-ran, described as a "fortune teller" on the island of Taiwan.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities have imposed restrictions and obstacles on cross-Strait exchanges and interactions, deliberately creating an "information cocoon" on the island in an attempt to prevent people in Taiwan from learning about the Chinese mainland, said Zhang Han, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, at a regular press conference.

"Their intentions are deeply malicious," Zhang said.

"We welcome our compatriots in Taiwan to break through these barriers, visit the mainland more often and see it for themselves, so they can gain a better understanding of the real and vibrant mainland," the spokesperson added.
