(ECNS) -- China is expanding meal services for older people, with 82,000 service sites nationwide now providing more than 4 million meals to seniors every day, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
The services are provided by a wide range of organizations, including elderly care providers, businesses and community groups, forming an increasingly diverse service network.
Authorities have also introduced supportive measures, including tax and fee reductions and preferential utility rates, to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the services.
Digital technologies are being used to make the services more convenient. Online ordering, community delivery and cashless payment are improving the dining experience, while digital monitoring systems are helping strengthen food safety.
In urban areas, meal services will be incorporated into 15-minute community life circles and increasingly operated through chain-based models.
In rural areas, local authorities will explore neighbor-to-neighbor meal sharing and other mutual-aid arrangements to help keep costs down.
The ministry is also developing policies to encourage greater participation from businesses and social organizations, including catering chains, property management companies and state-owned enterprises.
