(ECNS) -- A 25-year-old Chinese female student who had been missing for several days was found dead in Gyeongsan, South Korea, the Chinese Consulate General in Busan said on Tuesday after confirming the case with local police.

A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of murder, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The consulate general said it had urged South Korean police to conduct a thorough investigation and hold those responsible accountable in accordance with the law. It also pledged to provide full consular assistance to the student's family in handling follow-up matters.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the student entered South Korea on Aug. 14 to collect her graduate school diploma and lost contact with her family after traveling to Daegu on the evening of Aug. 20. South Korean police apprehended the suspect in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province, on Aug. 25 and later found the student's body at his residence.

Police said the suspect, who had identified himself as the student's boyfriend, was also the person who initially reported her missing. Investigators are looking into whether he filed the report in an attempt to mislead the investigation.

Police said an autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause of death, while investigators are also examining the suspect's possible motive, Yonhap reported.
