(ECNS) -- Chinese game developer Game Science released a 15-minute gameplay video for Black Myth: Zhong Kui on Thursday, the second anniversary of the launch of its global hit Black Myth: Wukong, offering the first look at the new protagonist combat style and snippets of the storyline.
The second title in the Black Myth series draws on ancient Chinese mythology and folk legends surrounding Zhong Kui, a figure traditionally associated with subduing ghosts and demons. His depiction riding a tigerin the game was inspired by a Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) painting of Zhong Kui riding a tiger.
The project was announced last August and remains in an early stage of development. Game Science said it chose to explore a new hero, gameplay, visuals, technology and story rather than rush to produce another Wukong title.
The shift to Zhong Kui takes the series beyond the Monkey King, one of the best-known figures in Chinese mythology. Black Myth: Wukong, based on the Chinese classic Journey to the West, was released on Aug. 20, 2024, with nearly half of its sales coming from overseas markets
