(ECNS) -- China recorded 3.275 million marriage registrations and 1.383 million divorce registrations in the first half of 2026, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

Marriage registrations fell by 264,000 from a year earlier, down 7.46%, while divorces rose by 52,000, up 3.91%.

The figures followed a rebound in 2025, when marriages rose to 6.763 million and divorces declined by 770,000.

In recent years, regions have introduced measures to encourage marriage and childbirth, including subsidies, financial incentives and extended marriage leave.

A nationwide childcare subsidy launched in 2025 provides 3,600 yuan ($500) annually for up to three years per eligible child.

A revised marriage registration regulation that took effect in May 2025 also allows couples to register their marriage across provincial boundaries with only identity cards required.
