(ECNS) -- China's 2026 summer box office has exceeded 8.5 billion yuan ($1.18 billion), with annual revenue surpassing 24.2 billion yuan, according to online ticketing platforms.
More than 120 Chinese and overseas films across genres have been released this season, with daily box office revenue surpassing 100 million yuan for a month.
Domestic animated hit All Wishes Come True has led the year’s animation chart with over 1.4 billion yuan in ticket sales. Spider Man: Brand New Day ranked third after opening in Chinese mainland cinemas two days ahead of its North American release.
Domestic comedy Johnny Keep Walking! and other films have also contributed to the diverse lineup of the summer season.
The upcoming film Once Upon a Time in the Middle East has earned more than 80 million yuan in presales, whose release is scheduled on Tuesday. More Chinese and overseas films, including The Odyssey, are expected to drive further growth in the summer box office.
By last Sunday, summer screenings had exceeded 30.22 million, up 6.3% year on year, while moviegoers surpassed 230 million, up 5%. The average ticket price dropped 3.2% year on year to 36.3 yuan, the lowest level for a summer movie season in five years.
According to the China Film Administration, 363 cinemas and 2,215 screens were added nationwide in the first seven months of 2026, expanding access and making moviegoing part of the “15 minute convenience life circle.”
