(ECNS) -- People in U.S. cities, including New York, Chicago and Houston, held demonstrations Sunday to protest U.S. military strikes against Venezuela.
In New York City, large crowds gathered outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is reportedly being held. Protesters held placards reading "No U.S. War on Venezuela" and "No Blood for Oil," voicing opposition to U.S. attacks on the South American nation.
According to a U.S. anti-war and social justice organization, demonstrations were held Sunday in cities including New York and Buffalo in New York State, Chicago in Illinois, Detroit in Michigan, as well as Houston and Austin in Texas, all calling for an end to U.S. military action against Venezuela.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that more than 60 percent of Americans oppose the Trump administration's military action against Venezuela.
War only brings harm, said protester Zoe Alexander, calling on the U.S. government to halt its military operations.
A participant, who is not a supporter of the Venezuelan government, questioned the legality of U.S. actions, asking, "What right do we have to kidnap another country's leader?"
The U.S. launched large-scale military strikes against Venezuela and detained President Maduro and his wife on Saturday. The move has drawn strong condemnation from Venezuela and several other countries, which accused the U.S. of violating national sovereignty and international law.
