(ECNS) -- The Hong Kong Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) strongly opposes Japan's plan to dump radioactive wastewater from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean and will implement import control measures immediately, John Lee Ka-chiu, chief executive of the HKSAR said on Tuesday on Chinese social platform Weibo.

Lee pointed out that Japan had unilaterally made the unprecedented decision and announced it to the public, allowing radioactive wastewater to be discharged into the ocean over the next 30 years, regardless of risks to food safety and the marine environment.

“Japan is imposing its internal matter on others, which is very irresponsible,” he said.

“The HKSAR government puts food safety and public health first and has instructed the head of the Environment and Ecology Bureau and relevant departments to implement import control measures to ensure food safety and public health,” Lee said.
