About 200 million Chinese are ready to hit the road for the upcoming May Day holidays, which are expected to be the hottest Golden Week since the outbreak of the pandemic, industry data showed on Wednesday.

Thanks to effective anti-pandemic measures and government policy supports, China's tourism industry may greatly bounce back during the five-day May Day holidays (May 1-5), projected Fang Zeqian, an industry analyst with online travel agency Trip.com Group.

Bookings for air tickets, hotels and scenic spots improved significantly from 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic, with the total number of tourists expected to exceed the level recorded in 2019 and hit 200 million, according to a report that Trip.com sent to the Global Times on Wednesday.

People had to enjoy the holidays closer to home last year amid strict pandemic control measures. This year, intra-provincial long-distance travel may post explosive growth, with about 70 percent of consumers choosing intra-provincial trips, according to Trip.com.

The report showed that airline bookings for this holiday were up 23 percent compared with 2019, and economy-class tickets were sold out for many routes.

Shanghai, Beijing, Sanya in South China's Hainan Province and Guangzhou in South China's Guangdong Province were among the most popular destinations.

For flights on April 30 and May 1 from Beijing to Sanya, economy-class seats are sold out, and only business-class tickets costing as much as 10,000 yuan ($1,532) are still available, according to data provided by Chinese online travel agency platform Qunar to the Global Times.

As of Wednesday, the number of people booking intra-provincial group tours on Trip.com for May Day surged six times from the same period in April.

Rental cars are also getting very popular among Chinese travelers. Trip.com data showed that car rental bookings for the holiday were up 126 percent compared with 2019.
