Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said the strategic partnership between Russia and China is at an historic high despite the current global economic recession.
He made the remarks at a meeting with reporters in Moscow before visits to Mongolia, Japan and China.
"I believe this is only a tentative situation. Russia and China have cooperation plans for mega projects in a wide range of fields such as energy, high-tech, nuclear energy, astronavigation, especially the aviation industry and telecommunications where major breakthroughs in bilateral cooperation have been made."
Lavrov added aligning the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) with China's Belt and Road Initiative is a crucial step in enhancing the geo-economic cooperation between the two countries.
"As the first concrete part of this job, we are discussing economic cooperation between the EEU and China. Meanwhile, we are also working on the roadmap for the prioritized projects in the EEU-China integration."
Lavrov also called for the building of a free trade zone between the EEU and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to boost regional economic growth.
As part of his speech, Lavrov expressed his view on matters in the South China Sea, saying disputes should be resolved through dialogue and attempts to internationalise the issue must be stopped.
The Russian top diplomat added that his country actively supported a political solution to the South China Sea issue between China and nations in Southeast Asia.
Sergey Lavrov also expressed concerns about the possible deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile system - or THAAD - by the United States on the Korean Peninsula.
