Former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai was seen at a shopping center in downtown Beijing Tuesday afternoon, reported by the Beijing-based Legal Evening News.

Accompanied by his entourage, Karzai went to the renowned Silk Street Market, widely known as "Xiushui" Market, along the Chang'an Avenue in central Beijing, a shopping center full of typical Chinese products.

Shopkeepers and customers were surprised to see Hamid Karzai in the Xiushui Market when he waved to them and said in Chinese "Ni Hao."

Karzai first went to a tailor shop on the second floor and bought a blue tie for 100 yuan (about $16 USD), even though the shopkeeper offered the tie to Karzai as a gift. After that, Karzai went to a Silk Boutique and spent 2,400 yuan on six silk scarves and three woolen scarves.

Karzai said in exclamation that the market was very nice and the products there are very good.

Karzai also received from Zhang Yongping, Chairman of Beijing Silk Street Co. a tea set with dragon design from China's renowned Jianyao Kiln.

Karzai has been in Beijing to attend the First Annual Conference of CICA Non-Governmental Forum, which runs through May 25 to 28. He went shopping right after the opening ceremony of the event.
