With the UK and China holding their first trade talks in seven years, economic and trade cooperation are once again in the spotlight. British business leaders highlighted that China not only offers vast market potential and a global perspective but also opens up significant opportunities for two-way investment and a green transition.

Lord James Sassoon CMG, president of the China-Britain Business Council, said in an interview with China News Network’s W.E. Talk that the UK stands out among major economies for not imposing additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, demonstrating the country’s open stance and long-term commitment to energy transition.

He noted that Chinese brands have performed remarkably well in the UK in recent years, showcasing clear advantages in technology, design, and product quality. “Maybe now is the time for encouraging companies to go both ways,” he stated.

“The sheer scale of the Chinese economy is vital to the world, including UK businesses. While China is the third-largest export market for the UK now, there is still a lot more to be done,” Lord Sassoon added.

Neil Robinson, international director of the Global Technology Innovation Partnership for the UK and Europe, emphasized that China continues to maintain an international outlook and remains welcoming to global companies. “I don't see that there's a protectionist problem between the UK and China, not at all,” he remarked.

Fang Qiuchen, chairman of the China International Contractors Association, stressed that the two countries have established a China-UK CEO Council, which serves as a key mechanism for collaboration during major economic and trade events.

As the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer reportedly plans to lead a delegation to China, Fang expressed hope that both sides deepen cooperation amid global uncertainties, promoting two-way investment and foster shared development. (Lin Zhuowei, Gong Weiwei)
