China's northernmost province of Heilongjiang issued a red alert on Sunday for blizzards, according to the local meteorological service.
Snow brought suspensions of primary schools, middle schools and kindergartens, as well as off-campus educational institutions in six districts in the main urban area of Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, on Monday.
The cold weather has brought about blizzards, rain, and snow to the country's northeastern regions, including Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning provinces. In response, local authorities have implemented emergency measures, including the temporary suspension of classes and business operations, along with an early activation of heating systems.
A mix of blizzards, frozen rain and plunging temperatures were expected to hit much of the country. Sanitation departments in multiple cities in north China have mobilized workers and equipment to carry out snow clearing operations.
