Teachers and students in NE China produce first domestic pipe organ

Undergraduate students from the School of Mechanical Engineering at Dalian University of Technology in Dalian, northeast China's Liaoning Province, used the expertise and technique they learned in class and engineering training to design and make　a pipe organ, the first domestically produced pipe organ in China. 　

As the "king of instruments," the organ can play hundreds of timbres, with its complex structure, large volume, and full of mechanical transmission and control devices. There is no team to research and manufacture pipe organs in China. The pipe organs used in domestic theaters, concert halls, and other places are all imported from abroad, and they are expensive and have high maintenance costs. 　

Guided by teachers, it took two years for the students to model, process, and assemble more than 1,000 parts to make the first small pipe organ. 　

According to Wang Xiaohu, a teacher of the School of Mechanical Engineering at the university, this organ is composed of windchests, skateboards, fixed plates, sound pipes, sound plugs, frames, and decorative plates. Within the frame of the all-mortise and tenon structure, 51 sets of keys and corresponding carbon fiber linkages, as well as 102 sound tubes of different sizes, are connected in eight layers of air cabinets of different thicknesses and patterns.

The blower and pressure regulator at the bottom provide stable wind pressure. In addition, Chinese elements were added to the design of this organ, and the decorative panels were combined with Dunhuang murals to highlight the beauty of Chinese manufacturing.
