Situated in an oasis in Northwest China's Gobi Desert, the city of Dunhuang was a shining pearl on the ancient Silk Road.

It is the site of the remarkable Mogao Caves, which are renowned for their statues and wall paintings. As China's oldest and richest repository of Buddhist art, Dunhuang also witnessed cultural exchanges along the Silk Road.

The sculpture at Mogao was modeled from clay on wood and fiber armature. Over the centuries, the statues and murals have endured constant weathering and erosion, and have also suffered damage from human activity.

To protect the cultural relics, China has been working on digitizing Dunhuang, transforming the buildings, painted sculptures and murals of the Mogao Caves into a digital format.

In 2014, the Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center was open. On May 1, 2016, the Digital Dunhuang resource database was launched, providing high-definition images, virtual tours of the caves, etc.

By August 2022, the "digital Dunhuang project" had completed the digital collection of 278 grottoes, the image processing of 164 grottoes, and the 3D reconstruction of many cultural relics.

Digital technology has enabled us to visit Dunhuang online in an immersive way. It has also made the cultural relics of Dunhuang accessible to the whole world. "Digital Dunhuang" is visited by people in different countries and regions.

The report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of Chinasaid,China will carry forward fine traditional Chinese culture to meet people's ever-growing intellectual and cultural needs.

The "digital Dunhuang project" has demonstrated an innovative way of showcasing and preserving cultural heritage through digital technology.
