Sheshan Mountain - weekend getaway

 

This area not only contains the famous mountain in Shanghai, but also a bamboo forest, bird watching opportunities and a variety of butterflies.

Where to stop?

 

Catholic Church

The Catholic Church located in the west of Sheshan Mountain is the second biggest church in East Asia. It was first built in 1871 by French missionaries. It has been reconstructed, and its scale was expanded in 1925. It is of Baroque architectural style that combines Greek, Roman and Gothic styles.

 

Bamboo Forest

 

East of Sheshan Mountain is a bamboo forest which is green all the year. Visitors can also play in bamboo buildings and bamboo mazes. Aside from bamboo, there are around 900 other varieties of plants, including some endangered species. The abundance of plants creates an ideal environment for wildlife and many rare animals have been found there.

 

Birds' Garden

 

Birds' Garden was established in 1997, and takes up an area of 20,000 square meters. There are 50 varieties of birds there including rare species, such as the red-crowned crane of which fewer than 2,500 exist.

 

Butterflies' Garden

 

Butterflies' Garden in the east Sheshan Mountain is the biggest of its kind in East China. Rare butterfly specimens and live butterflies are on display.

 

Suggested routes

 

Sheshan Mountain is located in Songjiang district. It takes around two hours to get from People's Square to the mountain by subway. The mountain is only around 90 meters high.
