The number of recovered COVID-19 cases in India has been higher than the number of fresh cases registered over the past nine consecutive days, confirmed an official in the federal health ministry on Sunday.

As per the ministry's data released on Sunday morning, as many as 92,043 COVID-19 patients had recovered during the preceding 24 hours across the country, while the number of new confirmed cases stood at 88,600.

With this, the total number of recoveries are close to 5 million. Maintaining its upward trend, the national Recovery Rate presently stands at 82.46 percent, said an official statement.

India's COVID-19 tally is inching towards the 6-million mark, reaching 5,992,532 on Sunday, even as the death toll reached 94,503.

New recoveries in the country had exceeded the number of new cases for several successive days during the period of the past nine days. There has been a steep increase in number of recovered patients. The single day recoveries on an average have been more than 90,000, added the statement.

According to it, this high rate of daily recoveries has sustained India's leading global position as the country with maximum number of recovered cases.

As India records more recoveries than the new cases, the gap between percentage of recovered cases and the percentage of active cases is continuously increasing.

The gap between the recovered cases and active cases is nearly 4 million, said the ministry's statement.

The number of active patients has been below one million for several successive days. The active caseload is merely 15.96 percent of the total positive cases and is consistently declining, said the federal health ministry's statement.
