Six people were left dead and 11 others injured early Sunday after a car plowed into a group of German tourists near Bolzano in the Alto Adige region.

According to reports, the incident took place at around 1:00 a.m. local time (0000 GMT) in the town, known as Lutago in Italian, in the Ahrntal Valley, an area popular for skiing.

"The CRI rapid intervention group intervened after the dramatic accident in which six youths lost their lives and several people were wounded," the Italian Red Cross (CRI) tweeted. "The CRI expresses its sympathies for the victims and closeness to their families."

The driver, a 28-year-old local man, was driving at high speed and tested positive for alcohol. He has been arrested for vehicular manslaughter, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

The six fatalities were all from Germany, Arno Kompatscher, regional president of Alto Adige, told RAI TG 24 public broadcaster in an interview.

"They were part of a group of German tourists who were on holiday," Kompatscher said.

The victims were standing next to a tourist bus when the car plowed into them, RAI reported, adding that a total of 160 rescuers rushed to the scene.

One of the injured survivors had a "very serious head trauma" and was taken to the hospital in a helicopter, RAI said.
