China's Internet giant Baidu has been awarded all the T4 license plates for self-driving vehicles that are capable of coping with complex road situations after the Beijing municipal government released its first batch of five of the new license plates for self-driving vehicles.

This kind of temporary license plate is designed for self-driving vehicles, which has been divided into 5 levels, from 1 to 5, and the T4 is the highest to date. Compared to T3, T4 had 19 additional standards for self-driving vehicles in facing complex road situations, such as being capable of detecting traffic signals, driving through a tunnel and so on.

As a pioneering pilot zone, Beijing has rolled out 44 roads, a total of 123 kilometers in length, throughout the city for self-driving vehicle tests. Currently, the city is constructing a 100,000 square meters test-zone, in order to push forward the development of the country's self-driving vehicles.

Baidu plays a pivotal role in the course of China's self-driving vehicle development. According to a joint report entitled "2018 Beijing autonomous vehicle road test report" by Beijing Transportation Committee, Beijing Economic and Information Bureau and Beijing Traffic Management Bureau, the company accounted for 90 percent of the total testing mileage of self-driving vehicles among all Chinese auto companies in 2018.

Baidu says it has been awarded more than 100 license plates for self-driving vehicles, which means it owns the most in China.
