Solar-power backpacks, smart dustbins, eye-tracking VR and 3D sensing cameras on smartphones — mobile technologies and products are shining during the ongoing Mobile World Congress Shanghai (MWCS).
The integration of technologies like 5G, AI (artificial intelligence), IoT (the Internet of Things), new energy and VR (virtual reality) has brought consumers a connected and smart society, industry officials said.
Solar-power backpacks, which can charge people’s smartphones and computers outdoors, attract crowds to the Hanergy booth. Hanergy products, from backpacks and portable chargers to tents, can charge themselves in most conditions, even on cloudy days and in low temperature environments.
The products offer people new methods for unlimited power supply, while easing “concerns” about battery life in the digital world, especially for tourists and business executives, Hanergy officials said.
Using sensors with mobile connections, smart dustbins are able to detect capacity, and systems to monitor water quality are displayed in China Telecom's booth.
Based on mobile and IoT technologies, people can develop “diversified applications” to improve their daily lives, covering energy, healthcare and urban management, said Zhao Houlin, secretary general of the International Telecommunication Union.
With new 3D sensing technology, visitors can create 3D files of their faces using Vivo's smartphones, which can be printed out by a 3D printer in its booth.
Vivo, one of the top five global smartphone vendors, said a new technology called Time of Flight 3D Sensing is going to be used in facial, gesture and motion capture, with a higher accuracy rate when compared with that of the iPhone X.
It can be adopted in education, medical and lifestyle sectors. Vivo has talked with Tencent to use TOF in WeChat payment authorization, which will be the first in its kind among domestic smartphone brands.
As one of the world’s biggest telecommunications equipment vendors, Ericsson is displaying eye tracking VR technology at MCWS. Based on low-latency transmission by 5G and eye tracking with fovea rendering, people can “see” high-definition VR content, with minimum bandwidth requirements, reducing computing needs in VR devices and saving power. The technology may save up to 86 percent of bandwidth consumption, Ericsson officials told Shanghai Daily.
More than 60,000 visitors from 100 countries and regions are expected to attend the three-day MWCS event held in Shanghai between Wednesday and Friday.
