Liu Jianchao, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met former U.S. officials and representatives from the finance and business community in New York on Tuesday.

At their invitation, Liu provided a brief introduction to China's modern history and the development of the CPC, according to a statement on the website of the government agency.

The two sides both recognized that understanding China's modern history and the development history of the CPC will be helpful in understanding China's domestic and foreign policies. Despite China and the U.S. having different political and social systems, they are both a major force globally and their policies have profound impact on each other and the world as a whole.

They carried out an in-depth discussion on how to boost the development of bilateral ties. They stressed that efforts should be made to strengthen communications and exchanges to increase mutual understanding and trust while reducing suspicion and misunderstanding so as to strive for stable development of bilateral ties.

Founder of Bridgewater Associates Ray Dalio, former U.S. treasury secretaries Robert Rubin and Timothy Geithner, and former U.S. undersecretary of state Robert Hormats, and others, joined the meeting.

China-U.S. exchanges in various fields got off to a good start in 2024, with multiple exchanges at the military, diplomatic and civilian fields being organized.

In a video speech delivered at the Carter Center Forum commemorating the 45th anniversary of the establishment of China-U.S. relations, Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Xie Feng on Tuesday called on the two countries to jointly steer their relationship forward despite twists and turns, by focusing on common interests as well as dialogue and cooperation, according to a statement on the embassy's website.

"The only right way to get along is mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation," the ambassador stressed, calling on the U.S. to reject the Cold War mentality.
