On August 28, Ambassador Cui Tiankai did an interview with former U.S. Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson on podcast program "Straight Talk with Hank Paulson" on current China-U.S. relations, bilateral economic and trade cooperation, international governance, China's economy and more.

"There is a clear continuity and consistency in China's policy toward the United States," Cui said during the interview when asked to comment on bilateral relations.

He stressed that it has been clear from the very beginning that China wants to have a constructive and cooperative rather than a confrontational relationship with the United States.

However, the relations between the two sides have changed a lot. "It has expanded, it has deepened, and it has gotten more complicated, more comprehensive and more complex," he said.

Noting that the two sides have been making efforts to manage the differences in a constructive way, Cui said that the larger common interest outweighs whatever differences there may be.

The ambassador stressed that many issues, such as the situation across the Taiwan Strait, Xinjiang, Hong Kong and the South China sea are China's internal affairs and should not become the obstacles between the two countries.

China is ready to support and contribute to the joint efforts to make global governance more responsive, more effective and help all of us to deal with not only the current challenges, but also upcoming challenges in the years to come, Cui said.

China and the U.S. share responsibility to the world to take the lead in cooperating with each other in initiating, supporting and contributing to international cooperation to deal with all these challenges, he added.

Looking to the future, Cui pointed out that there are new opportunities ahead to strengthen cooperation and to build a stronger relationship.
