China's foreign ministry said on Thursday that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's comments targeting Beijing and the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) were a vicious attack and that any attempt to smear China or obstruct its growth was doomed to fail.

Pompeo on Wednesday said that Beijing was focused on international domination and needed to be confronted during an address at a gala dinner in New York that was put on by the conservative Hudson Institute think tank.

The remarks came as the Trump administration said it still expected to sign the first phase of a deal to end a damaging trade war with China next month.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said Pompeo's comments expose the "political bias and dark anti-Communist mindset of some U.S. politicians."

"Pompeo's remarks were a vicious attack on the CPC and the Chinese government. It drives a wedge between the Party and our people, and it smears our domestic and foreign policy," said Geng.

During the past seven decades, China has made remarkable achievements under the leadership of the CPC and has made more and more friends around the globe, said Geng, adding that China will keep going along the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Any attempt to smear and obstruct the stable development of China is in vain and doomed to failure, Geng stressed.

He said China and the U.S. should coexist with mutual respect and urged some U.S. officials to correct their mistakes and stop making remarks that damage bilateral ties.
