China's Foreign Ministry has rejected comments by U.S. President Donald Trump questioning Beijing's role in resolving the crisis over Pyongyang's nuclear program.

At a regular press briefing on Thursday, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said Trump's statement was irresponsible and illogical.

She also urged Washington to examine itself rather than blame others.

"China's foreign policy, including the policy on the Korean Peninsula issue, is clear and consistent and has strong continuity. We hope that the United States can do what China has been doing: keep its promises and play a positive and responsible role in promoting a political settlement on the issue. The U.S. should look at itself when it encounters difficulties on the issue," Hua said.

Earlier, the White House released a statement on Trump's official Twitter account, blaming China for the difficulties in the Korean denuclearization.

Just days ago, Trump canceled Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's scheduled trip to the DPRK, citing lack of "sufficient progress" on denuclearization.
