The United Nations (UN) is willing to offer all possible support for the peace process on the Korean Peninsula, UN Under-Secretary-General Erik Solheim said in Pyongyang on Friday.

"I told the government leaders here, please contact us if there is any support the United Nations can give," Solheim told the media during his four-day visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) that started Wednesday. "We are ready to help."

Solheim, also the UN Environment executive director, visited Pyongyang and DPRK's seaboard city Wosan, where he observed the efforts people were making to improve the environment, like planting trees and managing the coast. He said it was very pleasing that the DPRK has agreed to participate in the UN Clean Seas campaign designed to get rid of ocean waste and improve water quality.

The UN official plans to visit Seoul next week to discuss UN assistance with South Korean leaders.
