The Chinese mainland expressed serious concerns on Wednesday after the United States exempted military aid to the Taiwan region, urging Washington to cease arming the island.

According to reports, the Donald Trump administration released $5.3 billion in previously frozen foreign aid, including $870 million in security exemptions, for programs in Taiwan.

Speaking at a daily news briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said the U.S. provision of military assistance to the Taiwan region seriously violates the one-China principle and the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, which gravely infringes on China's sovereignty and security interests.

"Such a move also sends a severely erroneous signal to 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces, which China has always firmly opposed," he said.

Lin urged the U.S. to stop undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, vowing that China will closely monitor the developments and resolutely safeguard its national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.
