2023 tourism expenditure per capita surpasses 2020 levels

(ECNS) -- The per capita Chinese families' tourism expenditure increased by 1,189 yuan ($167) in 2023 compared to 2020, showing a steady bounce back, according toareport on China's tourism sector prospects in 2023-2024.

The report, which was released on Wednesday in Beijing, explains that China's tourism consumption is recovering steadily. Among surveyed tourists across China, the per capita tourism expenditure of Chinese families was 4,989 yuan in 2023, marking an increase of 1,189 yuan or 31.3 percent compared with 2020, without considering the impact of price increases.

Since 2023, the top three items contributing to the increase in consumer expenditure in China have been accommodation spending (77.8 percent), dining expenses (71.9 percent), and shopping costs (45.0percent). The proportion of spending on transportation (35.2 percent) and admission tickets (27.1 percent) is relatively lower, while the least increase in expenditure is in entertainment expenses (8.3 percent). Chinese consumers were actively embracing domestic cultural tourism with an average spending on cultural and creative products reaching to 640 yuan in 2023.

On a per capita basis, the expected growth index of tourism spending in 2024 is 106.8. China's post-95 generation emerged as the driving force for travel industry, according to the report.
