Export orders to companies in Taiwan declined 5.3 percent from 2018 to 484.56 billion U.S. dollars last year, according to the island's economic affairs department Monday.

In December 2019, Taiwan's firms saw their export orders slightly increase by 0.9 percent year on year to 43.78 billion U.S. dollars, the first increase since November 2018, the department said in a press release.

The export orders in the first quarter of 2020 may not continue to rise since it is normally a low season for the electronic industry, the island's major exporting industry, and the slow growth of the global economy fails to produce adequate demand, the statement said.
