(ECNS) — Authorities in eastern China's Jiangxi Province have launched an investigation after workers at a new energy battery manufacturer were found to have abnormally high levels of lead in their blood, local officials said Tuesday.
The Guixi Economic and Technological Development Zone Management Committee announced the probe on its official WeChat account after media reports Monday said workers at Jiangxi Yuehai New Energy Co. had abnormal levels of lead in their blood.
The committee said it immediately established a special task force, initiated a full investigation, and arranged health checks for all employees. Blood samples are being verified through dual testing procedures, and experts have been assembled to conduct on-site assessments of the company's production environment.
Subsequent measures will be strictly based on test and evaluation results to safeguard employee health, the statement added.
Jiangxi Yuehai New Energy, located in Guixi, Yingtan City, produces sealed lead-acid batteries. Multiple workers were diagnosed with severe lead poisoning, according to media reports.
Workers told media outlets that production workshops had serious dust problems and inadequate protective measures. They reported the company previously provided only 15 KN95 masks per month per worker, upgrading to more protective respirators only after several cases of lead poisoning were reported.
