(ECNS) — China's Supreme People's Court (SPC) on Monday clarified judicial procedures in a high-profile case in which a Chinese woman was granted a divorce six years after her husband pushed her off a cliff in Thailand.
Wang Nan, 38, known online as Wang Nuannuan, suffered severe injuries after her husband, Yu Xiaodong, pushed her off a 34-meter (112-foot) cliff in a Thai national park in June 2019. She was three months pregnant at the time and later lost the baby.
Yu, who attempted to kill Wang to inherit her substantial assets and settle his gambling debts, was sentenced to 33 years and four months in prison by a Thai court last year after a third hearing of the case.
In September 2023, Wang filed for divorce with the Qinhuai District People's Court in Nanjing, eastern China's Jiangsu Province, facing numerous obstacles because Yu remains imprisoned in Thailand.
Granted access to the prison, Chinese diplomats questioned Yu regarding the divorce proceedings and prepared official transcripts, which were later forwarded to the court.
A video hearing took place on Sept. 26.
In October 2025, the Qinhuai District People's Court granted the divorce and ordered Yu to pay Wang 500,000 yuan (about $68,000) in damages, sparking massive cheers on social media.
