(ECNS) -- A tourist from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) was sexually assaulted in Taipei Main Station in Taiwan by a man last Thursday, arousing netizens' anger, Taiwanese media reported.
The attack at Taipei Main Station on the afternoon of Oct. 9 lasted about 10 minutes, with no passers-by stepping in to help, said Taiwan's Railway Police Bureau and local media on Wednesday.
The situation was ultimately interrupted after a Malaysian tourist noticed the disturbance and asked a friend to call the police. The suspect was then arrested, the police bureau added.
Investigation revealed that the 44-year-old suspect, surnamed Chiu, was already wanted on outstanding theft charges. Qiu and the victim knew each other, having met four days before, so the attack was not considered random. The victim was not sober when being sexually assaulted. After this crime, the suspect was immediately transferred to Taipei Prison's Tucheng District branch to serve a pre-existing sentence.
The victim has already left Taiwan by air.
Hong Kong netizens expressed outrage, with many questioning, "Why didn't anyone call the police?" Some pointed out that the station was packed with people and it's completely unbelievable that no security personnel noticed. Others criticized the indifference of people in Taiwan to the situation.
Some netizens argued that Hong Kong would have done better in this kind of incident, commenting, "If this had happened in Hong Kong's Central Station, it would have been subdued in less than 10 seconds."
