(ECNS) — Eight universities from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have been named in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, with five retaining spots in the global top 100 and all improving their international standing.
The latest rankings, released by THE on Thursday, evaluate 2,191 universities from 115 countries across 18 performance indicators spanning teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) continues to lead locally, ranking 33rd globally, up two places from last year. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) rose three places to 41st, while the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) climbed eight places to 58th. City University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University ranked 75th and 83rd, respectively.
HKU President Zhang Xiang said the results reaffirm the university's excellence in teaching, research innovation, and international collaboration. He added that HKU will continue to pursue academic excellence and contribute to overall high-quality development.
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) ranked 195th, with President Li Chi-kin noting that the ranking highlights EdUHK's commitment to advancing education and research through innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. Hong Kong Baptist University was placed in the 201–250 band, while Lingnan University ranked in the 301–350 range.
A spokesperson for the Hong Kong SAR Education Bureau said it is the only city worldwide with five universities in the global top 100, all improving their rankings this year. The spokesperson added that the government will continue to strengthen Hong Kong's position as an international higher education hub and talent center.
