(ECNS) -- "Dead to Rights," a film depicting the Nanjing Massacre during World War II, will compete for the Best International Feature Film at the 98th Oscars, according to its official Weibo account on Friday.

"Thank you to every viewer who stepped into the cinema. Let the world see, let us remember," the post reads.

Data from the online ticketing platform Maoyan showed that as of Friday, the film's box office has already surpassed 3 billion yuan.

"Dead To Rights" draws on verified photographic evidence of Japanese wartime atrocities in China in 1937. It tells the story of a group of Chinese civilians who seek refuge in a photography studio, risking their lives to preserve proof of the horrors committed by the Japanese aggressors during their brutal occupation of Nanjing, China's capital at the time.

Director Shen Ao explained that the film's name carries a dual meaning: literally, it signifies irrefutable evidence, which aligns perfectly with the film's theme, while on a deeper level, it conveys an unyielding spirit, a determination to persevere against all odds, reflecting the very essence of what the film aims to express.

The 98th Academy Awards is scheduled to take place on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

The Last Dance and Left-Handed Girl will represent China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Taiwan, respectively, to compete in Oskar's Best International Feature Film category.
